Samadrushti Kshamata Vikas Evam Anusandhan Mandal, better known as Saksham in the north and Sakshama in the south is a national organization serving people with disabilities. Formally registered at Nagpur on 20th June 2008, Sakshama has presence in almost all the states of India.
Government of India estimate says that, about 4 to 5 percent people come under the category of People with Disabilities (PwD). In a country like India, this number is a whopping 6 crores. When we consider their family members also we are addressing the issues of a group of approximately 25 crore people. RPwD Act of 2016 identifies 21 types of disabilities. Sakshama is an umbrella organization catering to people belonging to all these 21 types of disabilities. Apart from disabled people, Sakshama’s governing committees consist of parents or caretakers of disabled people, researchers, special educators, doctors, therapists, legal experts etc. Our vision is to create a society that recognizes the potential and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
People with Disabilities (PwD) are the community which deserves the consideration and care of the society the most. 40% disability is the official bench mark for the government and other agencies for considering a person to be disabled. A higher percentage of disability makes the individual and the family crumble both materialistically and emotionally. Modern societies understand these problems and try to support them to become self-reliant. Our experience shows that, if provided with right support and opportunities, many of these individuals can lead their lives just like other citizens and contribute in the growth of the nation.
Sakshama works through 7 verticals viz. Visually Challenged, Hearing Challenged, Orthopedically Challenged, Intellectually Challenged, Blood Related Disability(BD), Mental Illness(MI) and Leprosy Challenged. We strive to empower them by providing education, health support, vocational trainings and skill development.
